How to Prepare for an Abortion Pill

If you’re pregnant and thinking about the abortion pill, you may be trying to understand what to do first. Before taking abortion medication, it helps to confirm a few important details about your pregnancy and your health. Have a question now? Text a nurse for free at (815) 559-5722.

Before Taking the Abortion Pill

1. Start With a Pregnancy Test

A positive home test can be a helpful first step, but an on-site pregnancy test can give you a clearer next step before making a decision.

White Oak Women’s Clinic offers free pregnancy testing in a private, supportive setting. If your test is positive, a nurse can talk with you about what to consider next.

2. Learn More About Your Pregnancy

An ultrasound can help you learn important details about your pregnancy, including how far along you may be, where the pregnancy is located, and whether the pregnancy is continuing.1, 2

This information matters because how far along you are can affect whether the abortion pill is an option. The FDA has approved mifepristone for medication abortion through 10 weeks gestation.3

3. Make Sure This Is Your Decision

A pregnancy decision is deeply personal. You may be hearing opinions from a partner, family member, friend, or someone else close to you.

You deserve space to ask questions, gather clear information, and make sure your next step feels like your own. No one should force, threaten, or pressure you into an abortion decision.

If you feel rushed, pressured, or unsure, White Oak Women’s Clinic offers a private place to talk with a nurse and get support without judgment.

4. Consider STI Testing

Before an abortion decision, STI testing may be an important part of caring for your health. Some STIs do not cause noticeable symptoms, so testing can help you know if treatment is needed.

White Oak Women’s Clinic offers testing and treatment for chlamydia and gonorrhea for qualifying patients.

5. Ask Your Questions Before Moving Forward

It is okay to take time to understand the abortion pill, how it works, what to expect, and what information may be helpful before making a decision.

A pre-abortion evaluation gives you a confidential place to receive pregnancy testing, ultrasound services if eligible, STI testing and treatment when appropriate, and time with a nurse to talk through your next step.
