There are two main types of abortion: medication abortion and surgical abortion.1 Medication abortion, often called the abortion pill, typically involves two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. The FDA has approved mifepristone for use through 10 weeks gestation.2 Surgical abortion is a procedure performed in a medical setting to remove pregnancy tissue from the uterus.3
How Painful Are Abortions?
There isn’t one answer that fits every person. With medication abortion, some women describe cramping and bleeding that feels like a heavy period. Others may experience stronger pain, heavier bleeding, nausea, or other symptoms.
With surgical abortion, pain management or anesthesia may be used during the procedure. Some women still experience cramping, bleeding, or discomfort afterward. How you feel can depend on your body, the type of procedure, and how far along the pregnancy is.

Medication abortion is not the right next step in every situation. Before taking the abortion pill, it can be helpful to confirm key pregnancy details with an ultrasound. An ultrasound can help you learn how far along you may be, where the pregnancy is located, and whether the pregnancy is continuing.4
